Congratulations to the newly elected members of the UPAAT COUNCIL for 2011 - 2013!!!
Our big thanks to all those who participated in our last Election, especially to those who respectfully nominated all the candidates, as well as all the nominees themselves, who graciously accepted the challenges that lie ahead. To those who voted and entrusted the future of our beloved UPAAT to the new Council, thank you for your due diligence... and to the outgoing Executive Council and the Electoral machinery, thank you all. At the earliest opportunity, COMELEC will submit the results and all relevant election materials to the outgoing Executive Council for the official proclamation of the NEW UPAAT COUNCIL. LET'S ALL GIVE OUR NEW LEADERS A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE AND OFFER THEM OUR CONTINUED SUPPORT. MAY GOD GUIDE AND BLESS THEM TO DO WELL IN THEIR UPCOMING SERVICE TO OUR ORGANIZATION, OUR ALMA MATER, OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR NATIONS.

It is crazy how newcomers, a few days after landing, are advised by their relatives to apply for work preparing coffee and handing out donuts at the nearest Tim Hortons. I'm not talking here about uneducated Filipinos but friends of mine I went to school with. Tim Hortons, it seems, is the first rung on the Canadian career ladder for many Filipinos. Unfortunately, this ladder goes nowhere and the longer the newcomer stays there, the more difficult it is for him to later on switch to a new ladder. I can only imagine the poor guy being interviewed when he finally decides to move up...
Interviewer: So you were working at Tim Hortons for 5 years...
Pinoy: Yes, sir.
Interviewer: And you want to be a financial analyst?
Pinoy: Yes sir, I can do a mean double-double.
The main reason this scenario often happens is that people refuse to think outside of the box. Everyone they know started at Tim Hortons and so everyone else has to start there too. There's just no other way.
Well... the UPAA Career Development and Networking group has decided to break this myth by organizing the "Getting the Right Job" seminar series. A Filipino professional's Canadian career does not begin at Tim Hortons and we are paving the way for others to get on the right ladder right from the start.Read more
On behalf of the Council, I extend to all of you and your loved ones our best wishes for the New Year. We pray that our Benevolent Father in Heaven will shower you with His graces, protect you from harm, and bless you with good health, peace and prosperity.
As we close this past year, we look ahead with great anticipation to another period of dedicated albeit voluntary service to this great organization. We prepare our minds and spirit to forge ahead and continue with the work that we started a year ago in service to the general membership. On January 17, we will officially start the UPAA year with a Council Planning Session, then quickly followed in February by the Career Development Seminar series and the year's first Kapihan. Meanwhile, the Internal Development Group will be firing on all its cylinders to recruit new members and to improve internal environment ideally suited for membership retention. The External Development Group will continue to be a beehive of activities especially as the UPAA Golf Tournament draws closer. As you probably know, this tournament aims to raise money for the UPAA-Toronto Endowment which funds our professorial chair and scholarship in Diliman.
Early in December, our Communications and Information Management Group quietly launched our new and improved website. If you have not yet done so, I invite you to visit it. Current members of the Association will be able to login, update their profiles, renew membership, post classified ads, among other things. This new website is work in progress, so expect improvements as we go along.
These are just a few of the many things your Council has done and continues to do as a service to the general membership. As we move ahead into year 2010, we sincerely hope to do much more with your help and cooperation.
Once again, we wish all the members the very best for 2010.
