UPAA 2006 Annual Homecoming
The new president of UPAA Toronto is Noel Cruz
. Outgoing president (2002 – 2006) Bayani Bernabe made the announcement at the annual homecoming held October 29 at the YMCA Central in Toronto. He also introduced the other incoming officers including Fanny Calucag, Vice-President, Theresa Lumanlan, Secretary, Reena Liboro, Treasurer, and Amy Ada, Communications and Public Relations Officer. Also on this evening, the UPAA members elected seven new council members, namely, Gena Baldivia, Gilbert Esmele, Rose Marie Gerardo, Rheea Liboro, Oswald Magno, Mary Anne Morales and Rose Tijam.
In his warmly-applauded farewell speech, Bay reported that, in the last five years, UPAA Toronto has moved forward in substantial terms. He presented a brief account of the major initiatives pursued by the Association during his term and thanked the Council and the general membership for the opportunity to serve the Association. Bay will continue to work with the board of directors ex-officio.
Also a highlight of the evening was the presentation of the New Immigrant Support Program put together by Gilbert Esmele (B.S.M.E. 1991) to assist new arrivals to Toronto. This long-awaited project was welcomed warmly and elicited many offers of support . To start with, a mentoring program will be made available exclusively to UPAA members . Rollout is expected in the spring of 2007.
